Diaphonisation was first developed in 1977 by the scientists G. Dingerkus and L.D. Uhler, and has also been known as clearing and staining. The process uses chemicals which are employed to render the skin of an animal translucent, as wellas break down flesh, while dyes are used to colour the bones or cartilage.
